Panjshir has expanded its mining activities and investment opportunities in precious and semi-precious stones, while its emerald industry has gained a foothold in international markets following five years of development efforts, provincial spokesman Saifuddin Laton said.

Laton said Panjshir emeralds attracted significant attention at a specialized mining exhibition hosted by the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum in Kabul. He added that 12,423 carats of emeralds were sold for AFN 6.371 million at the latest auction, held in the presence of members of the Mining Protection Committee.

He said mining operations for emeralds, tourmaline and garnet have expanded across the province, attracting investment from traders and creating employment opportunities in extraction, processing and exports. Around 20,000 people are currently employed directly or indirectly in the mining sector and related activities, according to Laton.

He added that 17 types of minerals have so far been identified in Panjshir. Extraction of some has already begun, while preliminary work is underway to develop the others. Laton said mining activities are being carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Mines and Petroleum and in line with the Afghan government’s policies, with an emphasis on legal, transparent and standardized operations.
