The U.S. State Department has warned American citizens in Pakistan or those who plan to travel there to avoid public spaces.

The department urged its citizens to exercise extreme caution to ensure their personal safety.

The advisory comes after a deadly mosque explosion in Islamabad last Friday that left nearly 200 casualties.

Furthermore, several military and political analysts have characterized the situation in Pakistan as highly tense, warning of the likelihood of additional explosions and attacks in the days ahead.
