Colombian President Gustavo Petro strongly condemned the United States’ attack on Venezuela, calling on the United Nations Security Council and the Organization of American States to convene an emergency session to address the incident.

Petro said Colombia will deploy its public security forces to the border with Venezuela and, in the event of a mass influx of refugees, will also mobilize all available humanitarian assistance personnel to the area.

He further stressed that Colombia firmly rejects any form of aggression against the sovereignty of Venezuela and Latin American countries.

This followed a U.S. attack on Venezuela on Saturday, during which the country’s president was captured along with his wife.

Relations between the United States and Colombia have recently been strained. A few days earlier, the U.S. president accused his Colombian counterpart of owning drug manufacturing facilities and exporting narcotics to the United States.
