Italy’s energy-intensive industries have warned that soaring gas and electricity prices are driving production costs sharply higher, with annual energy expenses nearly doubling from €9 billion to around €18 billion, Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported.

According to the report, if current energy prices persist, gas costs could rise by 133 percent, while electricity costs could increase by 87 percent.

Industry officials warn that sustained high energy prices could force some factories to suspend production and weaken the competitiveness of Italian industries in global markets.
