The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. President Donald Trump has formally approved a 30-year civil nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia. The agreement paves the way for the kingdom to establish a civilian nuclear energy program and could eventually allow it to enrich uranium on its own soil.
According to the report, the deal includes U.S. assistance in constructing civilian nuclear reactors, transferring advanced nuclear safety technology, and training Saudi experts. U.S. officials said the program will be carried out under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and is intended to diversify Saudi Arabia’s energy portfolio while reducing its dependence on oil.
The Trump administration described the agreement as an important step toward countering Iran’s regional influence and reinforcing strategic partnerships with its Middle Eastern allies.
