Anadolu Agency reported that UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has expressed concern over human rights violations and the excessive use of force against protesters, including children, during widespread demonstrations in France, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, and Albania.
Türk said that people have the right to protest peacefully and make their voices heard. Therefore, governments are obligated to create the conditions necessary for the exercise of this right.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights also called for prompt, effective, and independent investigations into allegations of unlawful use of force against protesters, stressing that those responsible for violations must be held accountable.
He urged governments to engage in meaningful, inclusive, and constructive dialogue, particularly with young people.
