The Syrian state news agency (SANA) has reported that Thaer Hussein, former deputy director of the notorious Saydnaya prison, was arrested during a security operation in a remote area of Tartus province.

Citing the Ministry of Interior, the report states that Hussein was a senior deputy to the head of Saydnaya prison and had been under surveillance for alleged involvement in crimes against humanity.

The ministry confirmed that Hussein has been transferred to judicial authorities for further legal action.

Saydnaya prison, under the rule of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, is internationally known for widespread human rights violations, including torture and the execution of tens of thousands of detainees without trial.
