The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the interim government issued a statement addressing recent comments by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) regarding the application of Qisas (retributive justice) punishments in Badghis, Nimroz, and Farah provinces. UNAMA had criticized Qisas, arguing that it violates the right to life and called for its abolition. The Ministry condemned these remarks as irresponsible and based on a misunderstanding of Islamic law.

The statement emphasized that the application of Sharia punishments cannot be denied, as Islamic texts explicitly acknowledge the sanctity of life and regard Qisas itself as a means of preserving life. Therefore, the interim government views the enforcement of Qisas as its duty.

Furthermore, the Ministry stated that the criticism of Islamic Sharia laws is an irresponsible act that goes against UNAMA’s mandate and should be avoided in the future.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also highlighted that the implementation of Qisas follows a thorough evaluation by the interim government’s judiciary, ensuring that the accused is provided with the full right to defend themselves from the beginning.
