The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Afghanistan Director of Economic Relations, Shafi Azam, wrote on his X (Twitter) page that 15.7% of the oil consumed in the country is produced inside Afghanistan.
According to him, Afghanistan imports nearly three million tons of oil annually from various countries.
He added that with the implementation of new programs, oil extraction in the country will increase in the near future.
Mr. Azam expressed hope that this will enable around 30% of the domestic market’s needs to be met through internal production.
These remarks come at a time when, a few days ago, oil extraction operations officially began from five newly drilled wells in the Amu Darya oil basin by the Afghan government.
