U.S. President Donald Trump and Colombian President Gustavo Petro have engaged in their first telephone conversation after a period marked by mutual tensions and threats.
Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social: “It was a great honor to speak with Colombian President Gustavo Petro. I thank him and look forward to meeting him soon.”
He added that plans are underway for a meeting between the two presidents in Washington, though an exact date has yet to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, President Petro told a gathering of his supporters that this marked his first phone conversation with his American counterpart since taking office.
Earlier, Trump accused President Petro of running a drug cartel and participating in trafficking to the U.S., allegations that Petro has strongly denied.
