The spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, stated that at least 700 people have been killed and 2,800 others injured in intense fighting in Goma, a city in the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, since last Sunday. The injured are currently receiving treatment in medical centers.

According to reports, the armed group M23, which is allegedly backed by Rwanda, has taken control of Goma, one of the largest cities in Congo. The group is now advancing south while the Congolese army and volunteers are trying to resist and defeat them.

UN experts have confirmed Congo’s claims that Rwanda supports the M23 armed group, further stating that “Rwanda maintains direct control over the militia.”
