Syria’s transitional president, Ahmed al-Shara, is set to begin his first official foreign trip to Saudi Arabia this Sunday, following his rise to power.

According to Al Jazeera, sources revealed that al-Shara will stay in Saudi Arabia for two days, where he is expected to discuss strengthening relations between the two countries.

The Al-Sham Liberation Movement, led by al-Shara, overthrew Bashar al-Assad’s regime after years of struggle. Following the establishment of a temporary government, al-Shara was elected president just two days ago.

Notably, Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sent congratulatory messages to al-Shara upon his election, wishing him success in his new affairs.
