The Trump administration has begun a major restructuring of the U.S. State Department, with plans to close 132 offices, according to a report by the Free Press. These offices, originally established to promote human rights, advance democracy, counter extremism, and prevent war crimes, will be shut down as part of the changes.

This decision follows reports in recent weeks about restructuring within the department. As a result, the number of State Department offices will be reduced from 734 to 602, marking a 17% decrease.

In addition to the office closures, Trump has instructed senior State Department officials to reduce staff by 15% across their respective divisions within the next 30 days. This will lead to the elimination of hundreds of positions, including staff in six major offices.

These actions are part of a broader initiative by the Trump administration to reduce the size and scope of the federal government.
