Iranian Foreign Minister Says Tehran and Washington Closer Than Ever to Reaching an Understanding

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran and Washington are closer than ever to reaching an understanding on a potential agreement between the two countries, according to remarks he made to Iran’s state media.

He said an understanding could be reached within the next day or two, or possibly within the coming days.

Araghchi again urged Iranian media outlets to avoid speculation that could “disrupt the atmosphere and undermine this opportunity.”

He said that although the document is only one and a half to two pages long, negotiations over it have continued for two months, with every sentence and clause reviewed repeatedly.

“Reports have been regularly submitted to the Supreme National Security Council and security institutions, while the armed forces have also monitored key issues, including the Strait of Hormuz and the end of the war,” Araghchi said.

The Iranian foreign minister said a positive outcome would serve the interests of the Iranian people and help consolidate the country’s achievements. He added that those achievements would further strengthen Iran’s presence and influence at both the domestic and international levels.

Araghchi said the Strait of Hormuz is under the authority of Iran and Oman, adding that services there have so far been provided free of charge. However, he said Oman has decided that the future management of the strait will differ from past arrangements.

He also said the agreement includes the removal of sanctions on Iran, while discussions on Iran’s nuclear program will begin at a later stage.

“No decision has yet been made regarding enriched uranium,” Araghchi said. “Under any future agreement, issues related to the nuclear program and the removal of sanctions will be addressed, and their final outcome will be determined.”
