Unidentified gunmen have killed 17 farmers in Zamfara State, northwestern Nigeria, and abducted several others, according to The Independent.
Local authorities noted that the attackers have intensified raids on farming communities, mainly for extortion and looting, forcing many farmers to abandon their agricultural land.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that ongoing insecurity of this kind could further deepen poverty in the country.
