The Tasnim news agency reported that France has proposed €60 billion in new taxes to finance the European Union’s next seven-year budget, but opposition from several EU member states has created obstacles for Paris’s plan.
According to the report, France wants to increase revenue for the EU budget through new taxes while reducing the direct financial contributions of member states. The European Commission has also proposed five new levies, but opposition from member states to some of the tax measures remains.
The report said that the EU’s rotating presidency, led by Ireland, is seeking to reach an agreement on a limited and acceptable list of taxation options at the Brussels summit scheduled for October 15.
