Anadolu Agency has reported that US President Donald Trump said the US war with Iran was necessary despite its political and economic costs, and that his country had no alternative to military action to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
According to Anadolu Agency, Trump said at the White House that he stood by the decision to launch and continue military operations against Iran, adding that if the same situation arose again, he would take the same action once more. He argued that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.
Trump acknowledged that the war with Iran had driven up oil and gasoline prices and had also affected the Republican Party’s performance in the midterm elections.
This comes as US Vice President JD Vance has also blamed the war with Iran for the Republicans’ electoral defeat, saying that public dissatisfaction with the war prompted some of Trump’s former supporters to back the Democrats.
At the same time, Vance said that if he had been a candidate in the midterm elections, the Republicans would have won. However, he noted that they had failed to transfer Trump’s popularity and support among his followers to the party’s other candidates.
