Khalilzad: How many of the countries that supported the UN resolution on Afghanistan treat their own women equally and fairly?

Afghan-American former diplomat Zalmay Khalilzad, in response to the recent UN resolution on Afghanistan, questioned the human rights records of the countries backing the resolution. He asked how many of them have a strong track record of upholding human rights and how many treat their own women and girls with equality and fairness.

Referring to Afghanistan’s recent history of conflict and the sudden waves of refugee deportations, he added that these countries are making recommendations to a nation that has just emerged from 40 years of war, while its neighbors (Pakistan and Iran) are deporting tens of thousands of refugees without any preparation—at a time when Afghanistan is under sanctions and its assets are frozen.

Khalilzad concluded: “Have these countries presented any plan to help Afghanistan achieve these lofty goals? If not, then this is an irrational and shameful move.”
