Researchers at China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology have announced the discovery of a new strain of coronavirus in bats. According to the scientists, this virus can enter human cells similarly to COVID-19.
They emphasized, however, that the virus has not yet been detected in humans and has only been observed in laboratory studies on bats. Following the announcement, the stock values of major vaccine manufacturers, including Moderna, Novavax, BioNTech, and Pfizer, saw an unprecedented surge.
It is noteworthy that the Wuhan Institute of Virology is widely known for its research on coronaviruses. Some theories suggest that the COVID-19 outbreak originated from this very laboratory.
