The Syrian state news agency “SANA” has reported that the Syrian government, under the leadership of Ahmad al-Sharaa, has issued an arrest warrant for the country’s former regime president Bashar al-Assad.
According to sources citing Damascus judge Tawfiq Ali, the warrant has been issued on charges of the deliberate killing and torture of tens of thousands of people.
Judge Ali added that the decision was made based on complaints from the victims’ families and paves the way for the international prosecution of Bashar al-Assad through Interpol.
Bashar al-Assad, who ruled Syria for over two decades, fled to Moscow after being ousted from Syria in December of last year by the Tahrir al-Sham movement led by Ahmad al-Sharaa.
