According to Reuters, two members of the United States Congress arrived in Damascus on Friday for meetings with Syrian officials.

The visit marks the first by American Congress representatives to the war-torn country since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Corey Mills of Florida and Marlin Stutzman of Indiana—both members of President Donald Trump’s Republican Party—are part of the visiting delegation.

A member of the delegation said that Mills met with Syria’s new president, Ahmad al-Shar’a, on Friday night. The 90-minute meeting reportedly focused on U.S. sanctions and Iran.

Source confirmed that Stutzman is scheduled to meet with al-Shar’a on Saturday. The Syrian president remains under U.S. and United Nations sanctions due to his past ties with al-Qaeda.
