U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that if Nouri al-Maliki returns to power as Iraq’s prime minister, the United States will suspend its aid to the country.

According to an Al Jazeera report, Trump said that the last time al-Maliki was in power, Iraq sank into extreme poverty and chaos, adding, “This situation must not be allowed to happen again.”

Trump stated: “If al-Maliki is once again appointed due to extremist policies and ideologies, the United States will no longer assist Iraq. And if the U.S. is not there to help, Iraq will have no chance of success, prosperity, or freedom.”

Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had also expressed opposition to al-Maliki.
