Indian-origin Muslim politician Zehran Mamdani has been elected as the 111th mayor of New York City following a historic victory in the city’s elections.
According to CBS News, Mamdani defeated his rivals Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa by a majority of votes.
Reports indicate that this is the first time a Muslim politician of immigrant descent has assumed the mayoralty of the United States’ largest city.
Zehran Mamdani is a member of the U.S. Democratic Party and is considered a strong critic of President Donald Trump’s policies.
