Trump Shuts Down Voice of America and Radio Free Europe by Executive Order, Places Employees on Mandatory Leave

The New York Times, citing its journalist David Enrich, has reported that U.S. President Donald Trump has issued an executive order shutting down Voice of America (VOA), Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), and Radio Farda. Additionally, all employees of these broadcasters have been placed on mandatory leave.

According to the report, two VOA journalists stated, “All employees received emails simultaneously, informing us that we are now on leave. As far as we understand, this clearly indicates the closure of these radio stations.”

This action follows Trump’s executive order aimed at reducing government bureaucracy. As a result, the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) has suspended financial support for VOA, RFE/RL, and Radio Farda, leading to their formal shutdown.

Furthermore, Trump’s decision to cut foreign aid also affects media outlets funded by the U.S. State Department and intelligence agencies. This includes Afghanistan International, Amu TV, ABN, and other networks, whose budgets have been significantly reduced, with indications that they may soon shut down as well.
