Ahmad Massoud’s Symbolic Visits, Foreign Support, and the Challenges Ahead

In another round of appeals to foreign countries, Ahmad Massoud has once again held meetings in France with several political figures and former officials. Through these meetings and gatherings, Massoud seeks to attract international support for the National Resistance Front (NRF). He has even shared his “concerns!” about the current situation in Afghanistan with a city mayor and has propagated false information regarding the country’s circumstances.

This is not the first time he has sought help from foreign nations. Since fleeing Afghanistan in 2021, Massoud and his treacherous team have continuously appealed for support from foreign governments, intelligence agencies, and officials—a practice that seems to run in his family. However, these demands are part of his family’s legacy, but he must understand that such demands, as always, call the legitimacy of the Resistance Front into question.

The Resistance Front, in its illegitimate struggle against a legitimate government, has even sought assistance from Israel and is open to comprehensive support from countries like France and others—nations that themselves suffered humiliating defeats in Afghanistan and were forced to withdraw despite their advanced technology, strategies, and well-trained armies.

On the other hand, Ahmad Massoud’s efforts are futile for several reasons. Firstly, neither he nor his front have any physical presence or control over a single inch of land in Afghanistan. Most of their members live comfortably in countries such as Europe, the U.S., Turkey, Iran, and Tajikistan. Furthermore, the international community is increasingly focusing on recognizing or diplomatically engaging with the interim government, which has limited the global support available to the Resistance Front and isolated them.

On a broader geopolitical level, the support for the NRF from some countries has been further restricted. Key regional players like Iran, Russia, and China have acknowledged the interim government as the legitimate authority in the region and, conversely, have distanced themselves from the NRF.

Even if international support for the Resistance Front were to grow significantly, it would bring little actual benefit. Internally, the NRF faces challenges to unity, lacks coordination with other opposition groups, and suffers from internal fragmentation. These divisions and disputes among various groups remain a significant obstacle to forming a strong and unified resistance against the interim government.
