According international media reports, a migrant boat sank near Italy’s Lampedusa Island, claiming the lives of at least 26 people and leaving more than a dozen others missing.

The vessel, carrying around 100 migrants, was traveling from Libya to Europe when the incident took place.

Italian Coast Guard officials have confirmed the deaths, warning that the figures are preliminary and may increase.

The United Nations’ migration agency reported that 60 survivors were rescued and taken to a migrant camp on Lampedusa.
