Afghan government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, addressing a press conference on the recent Istanbul talks, stated that the activities of the Pakistani Taliban are independent of Afghanistan’s current government and originated long before its formation.
Mujahid stated that the Pakistani Taliban launched their movement in 2001, driven by the oppressive policies of Pakistan’s military regime and its mistreatment of the population.
He added that the Pakistani Taliban emerged as a reaction to military bombardments and abuses, noting that Pakistani army was engaged in conflict with local communities in the tribal areas even before the formation of Afghanistan’s present government.
According to Mujahid, insecurity in Pakistan is a longstanding issue that must be addressed domestically, within Pakistan itself.
