Novosti news agency reports that Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has declared an immediate state of emergency and ordered the recruitment of additional troops.

Sources note the decision follows a surge in insecurity, marked by rising kidnappings and armed attacks across the country.

The announcement comes less than a week after unidentified gunmen abducted 227 female teachers and students from a school in northwestern Nigeria.
