Afghanistan Bank says it has burned worn-out banknotes worth AFN 1.141 billion that were collected from the country’s northern and northeastern zones.
In a statement, the central bank said the banknotes were removed from circulation after being carefully counted and verified before being destroyed in a special incinerator in Balkh district of Balkh province.
The destroyed currency included AFN 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 banknotes. The process was carried out under the supervision of a designated committee led by the bank’s Second Deputy, Mullah Mohammad Akhund.
According to the statement, the collection and destruction of worn-out banknotes are intended to facilitate financial transactions by removing damaged and unfit currency from circulation.
Afghanistan Bank also urged the public to handle Afghan banknotes with care to reduce unnecessary wear and help extend their circulation life.
