Following a confrontation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a press conference at the White House, European leaders have expressed strong support for Ukraine and delivered sharp responses to Washington’s position.
In her response, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on her X account, addressing President Zelensky: “Your dignity and the courage of the Ukrainian people command respect. Be strong, courageous, and fearless. You are never alone. We will continue to work alongside you for a just and lasting peace.”
French President Emmanuel Macron, after the dispute between Trump and Zelensky, contacted the Ukrainian president by phone to express his support.
Meanwhile, Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union and a potential future prime minister, stated that Germany will remain by Ukraine’s side under all conditions. He added, “In this horrific war, we must never compare the aggressor with the victim.”
Furthermore, European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, emphasized that it is time for the free world to find new leadership. She stated, “Today, it became clear that the free world needs new leadership. This responsibility now falls on European countries, and it is we, the Europeans, who must take on this challenge.”
Additionally, it is scheduled that, on Sunday, European Union leaders, including Ukrainian President Zelensky, will meet in the United Kingdom, hosted by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
