Arab media outlet Wasl News reports that a fire at an orphanage in Algeria’s capital, Algiers, killed 11 people, including children, and injured 19 others.

The fire broke out on Thursday morning at an orphanage in the Mohammadia district. Civil protection teams rescued dozens of children from the building, including five children with disabilities.

Authorities noted the injured were taken to hospitals for treatment. Initial findings suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault in an air conditioner that had been operating continuously during extreme heat. However, officials noted the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
