Former U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said that the United States is not in a position to compete directly with China on its own.
In an ongoing debate in the United States over China–U.S relations and shifting global power dynamics, Blinken cautioned that Washington may struggle in a unilateral contest with Beijing. He pointed to China’s large market size, strong manufacturing base, advanced scientific capabilities, and maritime strength, saying these give it a broad advantage in several areas.
Blinken further stressed that a coordinated approach with key allies including Europe, Japan, India, South Korea, Australia, and Canada could together account for 50 to 60 percent of global GDP. In such a scenario, he said China would not be able to ignore or sideline such a bloc.
In the same discussion, CNN journalist and international affairs analyst Fawad Zakaria said that Donald Trump generally prioritizes power politics over ideology and values. However, he added that during Trump’s visit to China, his conduct appeared more structured, disciplined, and notably respectful.
