Reuters reported that Iran has halted liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) exports to Pakistan following Islamabad’s closure of two trade routes with Iran.
Pakistan had been importing around 7,000 metric tons of LPG from Iran daily. The suspension has worsened gas shortages in Pakistan and triggered a sharp rise in prices, according to the report.
The price of a 12-kilogram LPG cylinder in Pakistan has reportedly surged from $16.20 to $25.30, an increase of more than 55 percent.
Trade relations between the two countries have come under increasing strain since Pakistan closed the two trade routes for reasons that remain unclear.
Beyond trade tensions, Pakistan’s role as a mediator in matters involving Iran has also come under scrutiny. Critics have accused Islamabad of serving US interests rather than acting as a neutral intermediary.
