Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to use Iranian assets to compensate for maritime-related losses, warning that it would set a “dangerous and provocative international precedent.”
In a post on X, Araghchi said that seizing one country’s assets and using them to satisfy future, unrelated claims would create a precedent that threatens the security of sovereign assets worldwide.
He warned that countries and individuals supporting the seizure or use of another nation’s assets should recognize that if such a practice becomes normalized, no country’s assets would remain secure.
Araghchi made the remarks after Trump announced that compensation for damage to ships, cargo vessels, commercial goods, and other maritime-related losses would henceforth be paid from frozen Iranian assets under U.S. control, calling the measure “fair and equitable.”
Trump said future maritime-related losses, regardless of their scale, would be compensated using Iranian assets.
