Israeli media reported that Israel’s National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, has expressed support in a video for proposed legislation that would ban the loud giving of the call to prayer from mosques.
Under the proposal, police would be empowered to confiscate mosque loudspeakers and impose fines of up to 50,000 shekels nearly $13,500.
Ben Gvir stated that the measure is intended to address noise pollution and said he has instructed police to enforce the policy.
In his remarks, he said, “The religion of Islam is a religion of disturbing peace.”
Ben Gvir, who is widely regarded as a strong supporter of Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza, has frequently made statements expressing hostility toward Islam and Muslims.
