Kandahar Governor Mullah Mohammad Shirin Akhund has called for the implementation of major development projects in Afghanistan during a meeting with Faris Haddad Zervos, head of the World Bank Group for Afghanistan, and Richard Trenchard, a representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Kandahar governor’s media office said.
The meeting focused on raising the height of the Dehli Dam, providing continued support for Mirwais Regional Hospital, building cold storage facilities and check dams, expanding markets for fresh and dried fruits, and promoting alternative crops to replace illicit drug cultivation.
The World Bank Group representative briefed the meeting on the World Bank and FAO’s assistance and activities in Afghanistan, saying the World Bank had continued its operations in the country.
He said the World Bank also finances FAO’s activities in Afghanistan, where the organization works in health, humanitarian assistance, education, clean water and agriculture.
The meeting also discussed specific projects to strengthen the private sector and create more employment opportunities for local communities.
