The World Bank says Pakistan’s poverty rate rose to 29 percent in 2024 and 2025, with approximately 72.6 million people living below the poverty line.
According to the report, 218.8 million people in the country, representing 87.1 percent of the total population, live on less than $8.30 a day.
The World Bank has identified rising prices, economic stagnation and declining household incomes as the main factors behind the increase in poverty in Pakistan.
The report adds that rising prices of food, electricity, gas and fuel have disproportionately affected low-income and impoverished people.
