Syrian Finance Minister Mohammad Yasser Bernieh announced that Damascus will demand compensation from Iran for the destruction of Syrian cities and infrastructure, the mass killing of civilians, and Tehran’s support for the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

Bernieh warned that if Russia or Iran seek to recover specific debts from Syria, the government will respond by pursuing substantially larger compensations against them for their roles in the country’s destruction.

He said the dossier seeking compensation from Iran is currently being finalized at the Syrian Ministry of Finance and vowed that Syria will not leave “even a single Syrian pound” unpaid.

According to The Independent, Iran’s spending in Syria over the past three decades has been estimated at up to $50 billion.
