US President Donald Trump has said he has no plans to launch further military strikes against Iran after the midterm elections, stressing that diplomatic efforts with Tehran are progressing, Anadolu Agency reported.
Trump made the remarks while addressing an election campaign event in Washington. Asked whether he would consider another military strike against Iran after the midterm elections, he replied, “No.” He also reiterated that Iran would never be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons and urged voters to consider his administration’s efforts to prevent Tehran from obtaining them.
In a separate interview with Axios, Trump said he was in no rush to decide whether to resume direct military action against Iran, adding that contacts with Tehran were going well. He claimed that US pressure had severely weakened Iran’s economy, leaving the country more willing than ever to reach an agreement.
The comments came following reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had urged Trump in a phone call to launch an immediate strike against Iran after the midterm elections. Trump, however, has chosen to give diplomatic negotiations more time.
