U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the Trump administration plans to impose a new round of banking sanctions on Iran this week, as Washington seeks to intensify economic pressure on Tehran and further isolate it from the global financial system, the Associated Press reported.
Bessent said he would hold separate meetings with his international counterparts on the sidelines of the G20 finance ministers’ meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, and urge them to cooperate with the United States in maintaining economic pressure on Iran.
He previously said Washington was working on additional secondary sanctions aimed at cutting off potential sources of Iranian revenue and had urged other countries to limit their economic ties with Tehran.
