Anadolu Agency reported that the United States, Denmark and Greenland have signed an agreement on establishing US military bases in southern Greenland on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to the report, Denmark and Greenland welcomed the agreement, saying it would benefit the three parties, NATO and Europe.
Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen described the agreement as “historic” and a “win-win agreement.”
He said the agreement takes into account the interests of the people of Greenland, including their rights, livelihoods and development. Nielsen stressed that Greenland would remain a “strong and steadfast partner” of the United States and part of the Western alliance.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also described the agreement as “an important milestone” in long-term security cooperation. She stressed that it respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, as well as the right of the people of Greenland to self-determination.
The two sides said the agreement would strengthen deterrence and defense capabilities and prevent rival countries from gaining significant influence in Greenland.
