After nearly six months of political turmoil in South Korea, Lee Jae-myung, candidate of the Democratic Party, has won the presidential election by securing a majority of the votes.
According to the South Korean state news agency, initial results show that Lee Jae-myung received 51.7 percent of the vote, defeating his rival Kim Moon-soo from the conservative party.
The political crisis began following former President Moon Jae-in’s unsuccessful attempt to form a military government.
