Officials from the National Environmental Protection Authority (NEPA) have announced that by the end of the year 1410 of the Islamic calendar, more than 203 million fruit-bearing and non-fruit-bearing saplings will be planted across the country.

The aurhity’s director, Mawlawi Matiul Haq Khalis, announced an eight-year plan for tree plantation throughout the country, stating that from 1403 to 1410 of the Islamic calendar, over 200 million saplings will be planted.

According to NEPA, Afghanistan has a minimal contribution to the production of greenhouse gases, a 2015 survey has classified Afghanistan as the sixth most affected country by climate change.

Mr. Khalis mentioned that the country’s forests, wildlife, and environment have been severely impacted by climate change, and further advised that planting young trees and creating new forests will help counteract these impacts.
