At least seven people were killed and 27 others injured when seized explosives detonated inside a police station in Srinagar, the capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir, Al Jazeera reported.

The explosion took place late Friday night in the Nowgam area. Initial reports suggest most of the victims were police officers and forensic staff examining the seized explosives at the time.

Police said five of the wounded remain in critical condition, warning that the death toll could rise.

Investigators concluded the explosion stemmed from a technical mishap, rejecting claims of a terrorist attack.
