Ecuadorian officials reported that a violent clash among inmates at Machala prison on Sunday left 31 dead.
Authorities noted the clash was sparked by rival criminal gangs inside the prison, and quickly escalated into violence.
Ecuador’s prison authority said that in the past two months, other detention centers across the country have also seen similar outbreaks of violence.
Just days earlier, four inmates were also killed in Machala prison during a similar violence among prisoners.
