Disillusioned with the West; What Does Amrullah Saleh Seek in the East?

Amrullah Saleh was one of Ahmad Shah Massoud’s closest political and intelligence associates during the First Resistance. However, with the American invasion of Afghanistan, Saleh gradually rose thru the ranks in the security and intelligence sector of the fallen republic, eventually becoming the head of foreign intelligence for the fallen republic’s National Security, the head of the National Directorate of Security, and even the first deputy to the president. This advancement was not carried out by internal political circles but within the framework of a program implemented by the CIA and MI6.

During the republic, Amrullah Saleh presented himself as a close friend of the United States and other intelligence agencies. His previous positions and statements indicate that he considered himself part of the Western agenda and always emphasized maintaining, defending, and presenting himself as a sympathizer and leader of Afghanistan thru empty patriotic slogans.

After the fall of the republican regime, Amrullah Saleh wanted to present himself as an alternative to the new Afghan government. However, not only was he not recognized as an alternative by the West, but he was also forgotten by Western intelligence agencies and received no attention. This was because, despite Western intelligence agencies’ investment in the twenty-year occupation, he was a complete failure.

Interviews and analyzes by Amrullah Saleh with international media indicated that he wanted to regain the attention of Western intelligence agencies. However, the West has already reached a resolution to the issue, recognizing the new Afghan government as a reality and the ruling power in Afghanistan. They are gradually seeking to reestablish and move forward with diplomatic relations with this government thru political dialog.

As the global order is shifting from unipolarity to multipolarity, and Saleh, who previously presented himself as an ally of Western interests, even to the point of losing status, is now seeking an alternative to show himself linked to Eastern interests this time; for this purpose, he has preferred Eastern media over Western media and has sent a message to Western media that your monopoly is over and readers have turned to Eastern media.

From this disappointment, it appears that the interviews and analyzes conducted by Amrullah Saleh in international Western media were carried out within the framework of an intelligence mechanism, but they have now lost their value and Western intelligence agencies do not want to reexamine tested figures. Therefore, Saleh is trying to extend the thread of friendship with other intelligence agencies this time thru Eastern media.

Following the new Afghan government’s assumption of power, Russia in the East was the first country in the world to recognize the current Afghan government. Putin accepted the credentials of the new government’s ambassador in Moscow and, in his remarks, described Afghanistan as important for Russia and the region. This is because Russia and other major powers in the region have significantly expanded their diplomatic relations with the Afghan government. Today, Russia, China, Iran, India, and the Central Asian countries in the region have a new assessment of the new Afghan government and accept it as a “reality.”

Amrullah Saleh’s goal with this action is to present himself as an alternative to the Afghan government at any cost. That’s why he turned to Eastern media instead of Western media in order to preserve his political background in contemporary history and revive himself from political death. However, Eastern intelligence agencies around the world currently prioritize a policy of stability over alternative governments in Afghanistan and the region and do not want to use the trained and discredited pawns of the West.
