The Telegraph reported that Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said any nuclear agreement between the United States and Iran reached without the agency’s monitoring and evaluation would be a fantasy.
Grossi stressed that no nuclear agreement can be considered credible without the agency’s verification, and also voiced serious concern over the nuclear programs of China and North Korea.
Speaking to The Telegraph, he warned that the world is nearing a new phase of nuclear arms competition. He added that if the nuclear non-proliferation regime weakens, as many as 20 countries could move toward developing nuclear weapons.
He further underscored that adherence to international agreements and effective IAEA oversight are critical to preventing the spread of nuclear weapons.
