The Ministry of Urban Development and Housing says a major project to supply New Kabul City with clean water from Sayad in Kapisa province is currently undergoing technical assessment and design.
The project is intended to meet the future water needs of New Kabul City. According to the current plan, a water transmission route of nearly 55 kilometers will be constructed.
A 2012 study by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) estimated that the first four phases of New Kabul City, Kabul’s 17th district and Al Sheikh Township would require approximately 7.34 cubic meters of water per second.
The study found that about 4 cubic meters of water per second could be extracted from Sayad’s underground aquifers. However, an infiltration gallery system could increase the capacity to approximately 6.3 cubic meters per second, helping meet New Kabul City’s water needs.
Meanwhile, plans are also being discussed to supply the existing city of Kabul with water from Shakardara district and Panjshir province, with work on the projects likely to begin soon.
