In recent decades, Afghanistan has witnessed many changes; most of these changes have been marked by invasions or the defeat of occupiers in this land, creating numerous opportunities and deprivations.
The occupation of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union at that time also led to numerous changes in this land, among which the emergence of various jihadist parties and groups can be mentioned.
At a time when the oppression and crimes of the occupiers and their internal mercenaries had reached their peak, the proud nation of Afghanistan rose up with the minimal resources at their disposal to defend their beliefs and to drive the occupiers out of their land, and they fought to achieve victory against the Soviet Union.
At that time, despite the fact that the blessed jihad of the Afghans was specifically for the pleasure of Allah and responding to the call of the oppressed, some figures, taking advantage of the existing situation, used the name of jihad and struggle against the occupiers and preferred the trivial goods of this world over the unparalleled reward of the hereafter.
Yes! The individuals who carried the banner of jihad and struggle against the occupiers and chanted “Allah Akbar” were, in fact, seeking worldly fame and status, and they did not shy away from committing any acts contrary to religious law in this pursuit.
Ismail Khan; a name that for many people in Afghanistan, especially in the west of the country, evokes memories of war, power, and long-standing rule in Herat. He is one of the shopkeepers who, using the slogan of the hereafter, became attached to the world and deceived many people with tricks and cunning.
He, who is considered one of the famous jihadist commanders, played a significant role in politics and military affairs for years and is seen by his supporters as a hero who stood against enemies. However, on the other side of the story, another face of him is revealed; a face that has been less seen and less spoken about.
Behind this renowned commander lies a record that does not align with official and propagandistic narratives; a record filled with controversial decisions, contentious actions, and policies that had a profoundly negative impact on the fate of the people.
In this series of articles, titled “The Dark Side of a Commander: The Hidden Record of Ismail Khan,” we will take a closer look at the life and hidden record of Ismail Khan, relying on credible sources and references, and we will review the dark chapters of his life.
