Reports from Pakistan indicate that the targeted killings of religious party members continue in the country. Today, unidentified gunmen shot and killed Maulana Shehzad, the deputy emir of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), in Karachi’s Mominabad area.
In recent months, assassinations of JUI leaders and members have escalated significantly, extending from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Bajaur to Balochistan and Sindh.
While ISIS has previously claimed responsibility for many of these killings, no group has taken responsibility for the recent attacks. However, widespread belief suggests the Pakistani state plays a major role in these assassinations.
